Hello and welcome to 5R

We are a unique class of 22 children who work hard, have fun and enjoy learning. Along with our teacher, Mrs Cunningham, and our teaching assistant, Mrs Downes, we work as a team to achieve excellence. Our classroom is a happy place, where you will see a super group of young people working hard to demonstrate the MAPLE values and be the very best that they can be. With ambitions ranging from being a pilot to owning our own nail salon business to working with animals, we all know that our learning experiences at Maple Court are an important part of our journey.

Our Learning

Our English texts include ‘Hugo,’ ‘The Demon Headmaster’ and ‘Friend or Foe.’ Each one is a different genre and they have been selected to appeal to the children in Year 5.

We started the academic year exploring land use, coal mining and the farming industry in the UK and across the globe in our ‘Sow, Grow and Farm’ topic. In the Spring, we will learn about the key historical era of Ancient Egyptians in our topic ‘The Nile’ before exploring Word War 2 in our ‘A Child’s War’ topic.

Alongside this we will be developing our drawing and painting skills in Art and our sporting skills in PE. We will also be completing exciting scientific enquires and investigations on a range of topics from Materials to Space. Music, PSHE, French, RE, DT and Computing are also taught to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum.

Homework will be sent home each Thursday, to be returned on a Monday and the spellings will be sent home every Monday then tested the following week. We also have the fantastic Bug Club reading programme, which children are encouraged to read on at least once a week at home alongside their reading book; children are required to read their reading books at least three times a week, with a challenge set for five times.

Our PE day is Tuesday. Please ensure children wear their PE kit to school on that day.
