Year 2

It is a pleasure to welcome children and parents to our Year 2 page. Our Year 2 teachers are Mrs Steele, Miss Robson and Mrs Woollam. Our support staff are Mrs Barker and Miss Snow. All the Year 2 classrooms are based at the far end of the school.

Our Learning:

During the school year, we have lots of exciting topics to cover, such as: ‘Land Ahoy’. We are hoping to plan for a trip to the ‘Seaside’ in the coming months. Through the topic, ‘’Land Ahoy’, we will be learning about the adventures of Captain Cook and Grace Darling, whose extraordinary bravery helped to save nine sailors from a shipwreck. In Science, we will be learning about what animals and humans need to survive and then materials and their uses. We will be able to extend our learning through all areas of the curriculum.

In writing this term, we are working really hard to improve our handwriting. In English, we will be learning how to write exciting sentences, which have perfect punctuation. We will also be continuing to improve our spelling. Through our English, we get the opportunity to discover lots of different writing styles over the academic year. We will be working hard to write using conjunctions and expanded noun phrases. To help stimulate and engage us to write, we will read and explore the events and characters in a variety of story books such as ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.

In Mathematics, we are now beginning to consolidate all of the mathematical skills we have learnt so far including our knowledge of place value. There will be a high focus for mental and written methods for addition and subtraction. We are working extremely hard to make sure we can recall our 2, 5 and 10 times tables as these are at the foundations of Mathematics and can help us in many different ways.

In Year 2, we love to share each other’s achievements and enjoy being able to celebrate our success with both our parents and each other. Children are rewarded for their hard work through the use of our ‘Dojos’, small prizes, stickers and certificates.

Statutory Assessment Tests (S.A.T.s)

The children are continually assessed throughout the year to carefully identify their progress and next steps in learning. Usually, in May the children are required to take part in the National Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) for Year 2. The children are assessed in Reading, Maths, Writing and SPaG and these tests take place within the classroom setting. This year, the SATs tests have been cancelled but we will continue to assess the children’s learning in school.

P.E

This takes place on a Monday afternoon. The children will need to wear their P.E kits to school on that day. They will require pumps or unbranded trainers for their P.E lessons. Please ensure hair is tied back and earrings are removed.

Homework

Reading is still an important part of Year 2’s homework. It would benefit the children to share books regularly at home and I would encourage them to read a range of fiction and non-fiction books of their own choice too. Questioning the children about their reading to check understanding will help develop comprehension skills.

The children will read in class during Guided Reading sessions on a Tuesday to Friday. Spellings will be stuck in the children’s reading diaries on a Monday and these will be tested on the Friday that week.

Maths Homework is sent out weekly and is returned to school ready for the following week’s tasks.

Children can practise their Rainbow Multiplications on their Times Table Rock Star accounts. We are working on our 2, 5 and 10 times tables this year.

Break Time

The children are permitted to bring a healthy drink and snack. Otherwise, toast can be purchased in school.

They will also need a water bottle for use in class. These need to be taken home daily to be washed.

Please look out for any messages on Class Dojo to find out how you can further support your child at home.
