Subject leader: Mr D Ward
Here at Maple Court we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that captivates all. Our pupils will all benefit from this curriculum whether through enhancing existing skills, learning new ones or being introduced to new sports and clubs. It is our intent to ensure children in our care understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and we endeavour to equip them with the knowledge and skills to do so. We aim to develop values and transferrable skills such as fairness, respect and teamwork. All Maple staff have high aspirations for every child, every week and truly believe there is no limit to potential. With our committed teaching staff and brand-new scheme, we will strive to deliver high quality PE lessons covering the outcomes of the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. Children will be given chances to sample different sports, which will develop their skills year on year. Who knows, maybe the children will discover a new passion? The children receive a minimum of 1.5 hours a week of PE. There are also after school sports clubs running, as well as lunchtime clubs. In addition to these, with the support of the PE lead, ‘Sports Ambassadors’ help to provide/ lead additional sporting activities on the playground. At times, they will be aided by Mr Dickson of ASM three times a week, who is also running the breakfast club. Swimming is taught in year 4 and 6 with year 4 spending 2 terms at the pool to achieve the National Curriculum expectations of swimming 25m unaided. The children who don’t meet the NC expectations will have the opportunity to develop their swimming skills in Y6. The teaching sequence of PE follows the following steps; fitness, learning of new skills, application of the new skills, evaluation of performance through questioning and a cool down. Dance, gymnastics, invasion games, striking and fielding and athletics will be taught to all throughout the year. Our Children leave Maple Court with the knowledge and understanding needed to make appropriate choices about their physical and mental wellbeing. They will have developed self- awareness and become physically competent in a wide range of sports. The children leave Maple have a healthy attitude to competition and have developing sportsmanship skills. They are keen, eager and confident to try new things and can swim 25m unaided.
This year we have implemented a new PE scheme, on a three-year cycle, in order to properly measure the impact it will no doubt have on the teaching of our children. The scheme – PE Pro – was a clear choice of all staff, due to its ease of use and opportunities it affords the pupils. They will experience a range of sports in their time at Maple, and they will leave with a range of skills that can be carried forward in to KS3 and beyond. The scheme is complimented with the use of a specialist coach, who will be working across both key stages, alongside the class teacher, to deliver high quality and engaging PE lessons.
Children will be assessed in line with the rest of the subjects, using the same proforma. At the end there are two categories: emerging and exceeding. This enables all pupils to experience success.
Currently, our EYFS provision for PE focuses on the FUNdamentals of sport, encouraging movements and exploration.
