Welcome to 2KR! We are excited to embark on a fantastic year of learning, discovery, and growth. Mrs. Khasriya and Miss Robson are committed to creating a nurturing and inspiring environment where every child feels valued, supported, and challenged. Parents and children can look forward to engaging, hands-on learning experiences, creative projects, and memorable class trips throughout the year.

What We’re Learning

    • Autumn Term: Place value within 100, addition and subtraction strategies, and properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
    • Spring Term: Money recognition and calculation, introduction to multiplication and division, and measuring length and height.
    • Summer Term: Fractions (halves, quarters, thirds), telling time to 5-minute intervals, statistics, and position/direction.
  • English
    • Autumn Term: Focus on story structure through traditional tales, writing descriptive character profiles, and crafting simple instructional texts.
    • Spring Term: Exploring poetry through rhyme and pattern, writing imaginative adventure narratives, and creating non-chronological reports on animals.
    • Summer Term: Persuasive writing, diary entries based on historical figures, and consolidating grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills.

    • Art & Design: Colour mixing and texture through autumn-themed painting.
  • Spring Term
    • History: Significant individuals—The lives and legacies of Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus.
    • Geography: Comparing our local area to a non-European contrasting location.
    • Science: Animals, including humans (basic needs, offspring, and healthy living).
    • Art & Design: 3D sculpture and clay work inspired by natural structures.
  • Summer Term
    • History: Events beyond living memory—The Great Fire of London.
    • Geography: Weather patterns and using globe skills to locate world oceans and continents.
    • Science: Plants (seeds, bulbs, and what plants need to grow).
    • Art & Design: Printing and textiles using repeating patterns.
  1. Important Information
  • Uniform: Yellow polo shirt, black trousers or skirt, and a Maple Court cardigan or jumper.
  • PE Kit: Red top, black bottoms, trainers, and a school jumper or cardigan.
  • PE Days: Thursdays and Fridays. Children should arrive at school wearing their full PE kit on these days.
  • Jewellery: All jewellery must be removed prior to PE for safety reasons. Small stud earrings must be taped if they cannot be removed.
  • Snack & Drink: Please send a named water bottle daily (water only). Children may bring one healthy fruit/vegetable snack or order daily toast via the Arbor app.
  • Reading: Reading books and diaries must be brought to school every day. Please listen to your child read at least five times per week and sign their reading diary.
  1. Ways to Help at Home
  • Read Daily: Listen to your child read and read to them. Discuss the storyline, characters, and new vocabulary to build comprehension.
  • Practise Phonics: Regularly review the Phase 3 and Phase 5 sounds and tricky words sent home in reading folders.
  • Maths Skills:
    • Count objects, steps, or coins together during daily routines.
    • Practise mental addition and subtraction using real-life contexts (e.g., shopping).
    • Identify 2D and 3D shapes in your surrounding environment.
  • Digital Learning: Encourage your child to log into Numbots for 5–10 minutes daily to build confidence with number bonds and mental arithmetic skills.

Everything you need to know about Year 2 should be found on this page. We are a happy, fun and hard-working year band with children who love to learn and follow the Maple Values every day!

Our fabulous team of children are supported and guided by Mrs Ball, Miss Williams, Miss Marshall and Mrs Reeves.

Key Information

  • Our school day is 8:40am until 3:20pm.
  • Door close 10 minutes after these times.
  • Please ensure reading diaries are in school every day.
  • Reading books will be changed after your child has read 3 times in guided sessions.
  • Children are expected to read at least 5 times per week at home (please sign the diary to show this has happened).Class Dojo is used as a communication between school and home – speak to one of us if you are not connected.
  • PE days will be advised on Class Dojo.
  • Children may come to school in their PE kit on PE days.
  • Every child needs a water bottle in school which we can refill during the day.
  • Children can bring a snack in to have at break time (fruit or cereal bar) or toast can be ordered via Arbor.
  • Fruit is provided for the children in the afternoon.
  • 100% attendance stickers are given out the week after 100% attendance.
  • Children earn team points throughout the day, these can be seen on Class Dojo.
  • If someone different is collecting your child, please ensure they have your secret password to give to the teacher.

English

Phonics, guided reading, spelling and handwriting sessions all support the main English lessons. This year we are using Grammarsaurus for our spelling sessions, pen-pals for our handwriting and Little Wandle for phonics and guided reading.

The children have 3 guided reading sessions a week and then bring their book home to share with you.

Our English sessions will be based around the following texts:

  • Autumn: Little Red, Wolves and A Mouse called Maisey.
  • Spring: Jack and the Beanstalk and Over the Rainbow.
  • Summer: The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark and Pirate Tom.

Maths

In Year 2, the children learn to count to 100 and understand place value using tens and ones. They practise adding and subtracting numbers up to 100, and begin learning multiplication and division with the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

They will explore fractions like halves, quarters, and thirds. Measurement includes length, weight, volume, money, and telling the time to the nearest five minutes.

Geometry covers 2D and 3D shapes, symmetry, and position.

They also start reading simple charts and graphs in statistics.

The children will have access to Times-table Rockstars to support their understanding of times-tables, and we will be completing assertive mentoring sessions during our Big Maths lesson on a Friday morning.
