Year 3

Welcome to 3L!

Miss Leese is thrilled to be teaching Year 3 this year, working right alongside Miss Thursfield, Miss Jordan, and Mrs Barker. We have a fantastic year ahead, filled with journeys into the past in history, interactive science experiments, brand-new French lessons, and plenty of opportunity to build our digital skills on our personal classroom Chromebooks.

Our Class & School Values

What We’re Learning

Mathematics

Autumn Term: Place value up to 1,000 (hundreds, tens, and ones) and addition and subtraction problems within 1,000.

Spring Term: Beginning multiplication and division (focusing on 3, 4, 6, and 8 times tables) and introducing fractions.

Summer Term: Practical measurement (length, weight, volume, and money), geometry (2D/3D shapes, symmetry, position), and telling the time.

English

Autumn Term: Completing a retell of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and writing based on Stone Age Boy.

Spring Term: Writing a retell with speech and a letter home based on The Boy Who Stole the Pharaoh’s Lunch, alongside a retell of Augustus and His Smile.

Summer Term: Writing a persuasive letter and a narrative based on The Great Kapok Tree.

Our Curriculum in 3L

Autumn Term:

History: The Three Ages (Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age), exploring what life was like for people during these times.

Science: Investigating what our skeleton does, why it is important, and learning about the importance of a healthy diet.

Geography: Conservation of bees, exploring why bees are essential for our ecosystem and practical steps we can take to save them, such as planting pollinator-friendly flowers and building bee hotels.

French: Learning basic spoken language skills, including greeting others and saying “Bonjour!”.

Spring Term:

History: Exploring Ancient Egypt, creating strong cross-curricular links with our English text.

Science: Learning all about Mary Anning, how fossils are formed, and exploring different types of fossils.

Geography: The UK, developing map reading skills and understanding the different countries, regions, and cities of the United Kingdom.

French: Focusing more on written French, expanding vocabulary, and exploring different French celebrations.

Summer Term:

History: Ancient Greece, exploring what everyday life was like, their lasting achievements, and looking into the origins of the Olympic Games.

Science: Forces and magnetic materials.

Geography: Land use and exploring our local area, examining how land is used in our community and honing fieldworking skills.

French: Consolidating everything learned throughout the year, including counting numbers and basic everyday phrases.

Important Information

Uniform: Our school uniform is a yellow polo shirt, with black trousers or a skirt, and a Maple Court cardigan or jumper.

PE Kit: The PE kit is a red top, black bottoms, trainers, and a school jumper or cardigan.

PE Days: PE is on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Children can come to school wearing their PE kit on these days.

Jewellery: For safety reasons, all jewellery must be removed for PE.

Snack & Drink: Every child needs a named water bottle in school every day, which we can refill during the day. Children may also bring one healthy snack or order toast.

Reading: Reading books and diaries should be brought to school every day. We kindly ask that you listen to your child read at least five times a week and sign their diary.

Ways to Help at Home

Read Daily: Listen to your child read at least 5 times a week and sign their reading diary. Discuss the story and new vocabulary.

Practise Phonics & Spelling: Regularly review spelling patterns and vocabulary covered in our spelling sessions.

Maths Skills: Use Times-table Rockstars (TTRS) to practise rapid recall of the 3, 4, 6, and 8 times tables. Practise KIRFS – Key instant recall facts to practise mental maths

Welcome to 3T! Miss Thursfield is enjoying teaching Year 3 alongside Miss Leese, Mrs Barker, and Miss Jordan.
