At Maple Court Academy, our curriculum promotes and sustains a thirst for knowledge and a love of learning across all subjects. The curriculum delivered here at Maple Court is focused on the development of the whole child which is encompassed in our purpose statement of:

‘Encouraging and nurturing the aspirations of all pupils to achieve their dreams.’

Curriculum Intent:

The curriculum at Maple Court is underpinned by the objectives of the National Curriculum and all pupils are provided with a broad and ambitious curriculum in each subject that will enable them to know more, remember more and do more whilst becoming independent learners who are prepared for life now and in the future. Objectives in each subject are mapped out in a progressive manner which ensures that knowledge and skills are developed and built upon as pupils move through the academy, ensuring that they are ready for the next stage of their educational journey. These are the key drivers and values that are specific to our pupils and community and these are crucial in enabling our pupils to be successful citizens who are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for their future. Through our values being interwoven throughout our curriculum and daily academy life, we also develop pupils cultural capital, their curiosity and independence.

Within our curriculum, subjects are delivered on a weekly basis and all subjects have clear curriculum planning in place which has been mapped out by leaders in the academy, working alongside Alpha Academies Trust Standards Leaders. The curriculum for each subject allows knowledge and skills to build across each unit of learning and clear end points are identified. Content, objectives and vocabulary are mapped out within long term and medium term plans to ensure there is coherent coverage and progression within each subject. Recall and retrieval opportunities are a key element of each lesson and monitor and assess pupil knowledge and understanding, as well as embedding key concepts in the learning. Our curriculum is provides many opportunities, through an extensive enrichment offer, which supports the delivery of the curriculum thus supporting in fulfilling our purpose of encouraging and nurturing the aspirations of all of our pupils.

Curriculum Implementation:

Our ambitious curriculum is implemented through high quality teaching and learning for all pupils across all subjects.

A consistent lesson structure in subjects incorporates the following stages to ensure learning for all and the deepening of knowledge and skills:

• Revisiting the definition of each subject (e.g. What is Geography?)
• Retrieval practice which revisit key learning
• Word Aware used to revisit previously taught vocabulary and to introduce new vocabulary
• New learning for today
• Independent learning tasks
• What has been learnt during the lesson

Lessons are adapted by teachers to meet the learning needs and requirements of all pupils to ensure that the learning is accessible for all. Where appropriate, enrichment opportunities are provided which extend the learning beyond every day classroom teaching. There are many opportunities to work with secondary subject specialists within the Alpha Academies Trust throughout the year.
