Physical Education at Maple Court Academy

Intent:

At Maple Court Academy, we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that captivates all. Our pupils will all benefit from this curriculum, whether through enhancing existing skills, learning new ones, or being introduced to new sports and clubs. It is our intention to ensure children in our care understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, and we endeavor to equip them with the knowledge and skills to do so. We aim to develop values and transferable skills such as fairness, respect, and teamwork.

The Subject Leader:

Hi, I am Mr Leese, the PE lead teacher here at Maple Court. I boast a wealth of experience with schools, sports, and physical education. With a Sports Science degree under my belt, I also have a unique specialism in how physical activity boosts children’s academic success—exploring how PE lessons are designed to sharpen the mind as much as the body!
Beyond the classroom, I am a familiar face locally, regularly competing in both cricket and football matches. Whether coaching on the field or inspiring students to try a new sport, I am dedicated to ensuring every child finds joy in movement and understands the lifelong benefits of staying active.

The curriculum:

PE at Maple Court follows the statutory guidance of 2 hours per week. Teaching is supplemented through the PEPro Teaching Program, ensuring lessons are expertly planned and sequences are followed by teachers. The teaching sequence follows these specific steps:
  • Fitness * Learning of new skills * Application of the new skills * Evaluation of performance
Our children leave Maple Court with the knowledge and understanding needed to make appropriate choices about their physical and mental wellbeing. They will have developed self-awareness and become physically competent in a wide range of sports.
Swimming is taught in Years 3 to 6 using our on-site swimming pool, staffed with a lifeguard and instructor. This provides the ideal environment for children to achieve the National Curriculum expectation of swimming 25m unaided.
Children are also provided with opportunities to apply skills in a range of competitions and clubs throughout the year, including football and cricket clubs, boys’ and girls’ football teams, and athletics events. We also host events aimed at children who do not traditionally enjoy PE with a view to increasing engagement, alongside opportunities to engage in Bikeability and Chance 2 Shine cricket programs.

Assessment for learning:

Children will be assessed against the lesson objectives using statements such as ‘I understand attacking tactics in basketball’. This allows us to track progress against age-related expectations, recognizing and supporting those who are emerging in a skill as well as challenging those who are exceeding targets, enabling all children to experience success and improvement.

EYFS:

Currently, our EYFS provision for PE focuses on the FUNdamentals of sport, encouraging movements, exploration, and the building of core physical confidence.
