Welcome to 6GS

We are a chatty bunch, but we also know it is important to get our heads down and work hard. We know that some parts of Year 6 can be tough, but we know we have a great mix of personalities and topics to help us through. Mrs Stanyer will do her upmost to make this year the best and most exciting yet – one that they remember for years to come and prepares them for their next step of their education! In Year 6 it is vital to strive to be role models for the younger years and show our MAPLE values at all times. SATs are an important part of our Y6 journey, and we will make sure the children are as prepared as possible, but we recognise that there is so much more to your children that SATs results, so we can’t wait to celebrate all of their other talents and successes along the way in our bi-weekly assemblies!

English

In Year 6, our first text, Fox, engages all in a story of trauma, loyalty and friendship where we delve deeply into the character thoughts, feelings and emotions. In the lead up to Christmas, we are filled with joy and look at the tale ‘The Journey’ this filled our festive hearts with the love tale of two snow characters. Pig Heart Boy is one of the favourite texts in Year 6. Combining this book with active reading sessions, balanced debates and cross curricular learning with our science topic we will produce a number of written pieces on this text. Reading is such an important skill, not only in Year 6, but in life too. We will spend the year engrossed in a variety of texts in Guided Reading, starting with the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom; however, the year will be filled with cold texts to prepare us for the end of the year.

The children will do practise papers and be invited to boosters nearer during the year to ensure they are as fully prepared as possible for their SATs: by the time they come, children are usually so excited to show off what they can do and get them done.
